Equipment Needed

Setup

  1. Attach a funnel support to the ring stand.
  2. Place a funnel in one of the openings of the funnel support.
  3. Place a beaker beneath the stem of the funnel, and adjust the height of the funnel support so that the bottom of the stem is just below the rim of the beaker.
  4. Take one piece of filter paper and fold it in half.
  5. While still folded in half, fold the paper in half again, perpendicular to the first fold. You should now have a piece of filter paper that looks like a quarter of a pie.
  6. Looking at the edges of the filter paper, you should see 4 layers of paper. Grasp three of the layers and separate them from the fourth layer. You should now have a cone shape.
  7. Place the filter paper down into the funnel; the filter paper should fit snug into the funnel. If necessary, use a little bit of distilled water from the wash bottle to moisten the filter paper. The moisture helps the filter paper adhere to the sides of the funnel.
