Test tube racks can be made of wood, metal, or plastic. Test tube racks are used for holding test tubes upright when they contain chemicals, and also hold test tubes upside down to dry. They can also be used to line up several test tubes to be used as collection containers in a distillation.
Test tube tongs are made of stainless steel or brass. Test tube tongs are used to hold and transport hot test tubes. The test tube fits inside the jaws of the clamp, which are seen on the left side of the illustration.
Triangular files are much like the triangular files you might find in a workshop or industrial arts shop. Their purpose in the chemistry laboratory is to score glass tubing to create clean breaks in the glass tubing. The proper technique is to make one deep groove in the tubing, and then with the groove pointing away from you, apply a small amount of pressure with your thumbs. The glass tubing will break easily and should have a fairly smooth edge, which should then be fire-polished.
Troughs, sometimes referred to as pneumatic troughs, are used to hold water for experiments. Most commonly, troughs are used to hold water used in gas collection experiments.
Wash bottles have many uses in the chemistry laboratory. They are most commonly used to store and dispense distilled water. This distilled water can be used to dispense distilled water whenever it is needed in an experimental procedure, as well as to provide a final rinse when glassware is washed at the end of an experiment.
